Product Overview

Made from natural diatomaceous earth raw materials through high-temperature calcination, crushing, and screening, these porous, hard granules are lightweight and dry to the touch. They feature a rich pore structure, are dust-free and resistant to crumbling, and come in a natural earthy brown color with uniform particle size. Designed as a specialized breathable horticultural substrate, they can be used as a top dressing or mixed with nutrient-rich soil to improve potting mixes; they are suitable for a wide range of potted plants, including succulents, foliage plants, flowers, and bonsai.

Product Features

Highly porous and breathable, preventing root suffocation and rot: Filled with micron-sized capillary pores, it opens up gaps within the soil to alleviate compaction. It ensures rapid drainage of excess water, maintaining a well-aerated environment for roots and significantly reducing the risk of black rot and root decay.

Absorbs and retains water and nutrients with slow release: The pores absorb moisture and trace nutrients, slowly releasing water during dry spells to prevent moisture fluctuations. It locks in nutrients to prevent loss through runoff, providing a long-lasting supply and reducing the need for frequent fertilization.

Hard texture resistant to crumbling, ensuring long-term use: A calcination process enhances granule hardness, making them resistant to breaking down into powder from repeated watering or compression. They last 1–2 years without needing replacement; they do not cloud water when used as a top dressing and do not clog drainage holes when mixed into the soil.

Mildly neutral pH, suitable for most plants: With a gentle pH level, it does not burn roots or alter the soil's acidity or alkalinity. It is ideal for a wide range of plants—including succulents, foliage plants, and flowering varieties—and is safe for use with everything from seedlings to mature specimens.

Application Scenarios

Succulent Cultivation: Spread as a top dressing to separate the plant from moist underlying soil, preventing the bottom leaves from turning mushy (water-logging); it offers a clean, aesthetic look and inhibits fungus gnats from laying eggs.

Bonsai and Micro-landscaping: Mix into the soil for pine, cypress, elm, and *Sageretia* (bird-plum) bonsai to improve drainage; use as a top dressing for moss micro-landscapes and decorative potted plants to provide a natural texture while keeping the base dry and mold-free.

Cuttings and Leaf Propagation: Mix into the propagation medium to create a loose, sterile, breathable, and moisture-retentive environment; this significantly boosts rooting success rates for stems and succulent leaves while reducing rot.

Garden Soil Amendment: Mix into heavy, compacted outdoor garden or vegetable patch soil to loosen the texture and improve drainage and aeration, effectively amending heavy clay soils.

FAQ

1. Is diatomaceous earth acidic or alkaline? Is it suitable for all plants?

After calcination, it is nearly neutral with a mild pH that won't burn roots. It is suitable for a wide range of plants—including succulents, pothos, roses, orchids, bonsai, and vegetable seedlings—and works for both acid-loving and alkaline-loving plants without altering the soil's existing pH balance.

2. Can it be used as a top dressing directly on the soil surface? What are the benefits?

Yes, absolutely. As a top dressing, it creates a barrier between the moist soil and the plant, preventing the bottom leaves of succulents from touching the soil and turning to mush. It also blocks fungus gnats from laying eggs in the soil. It keeps the plant clean and attractive by preventing soil splashes on leaves and pots during watering, while maintaining surface breathability to reduce mold growth.

3. Does it crumble easily? How long does it last before needing replacement?

This is a high-temperature calcined, hard-grade product; under normal watering and care, it won't easily crumble for 1–2 years. However, frequent heavy flushing or prolonged exposure to stagnant, humid conditions may cause slight degradation. For soil-mix types, replacement is recommended during repotting (every 1–2 years); for top-dressing types, you can simply replenish with fresh granules every six months.

4. How well does it retain water? Will it absorb too much and cause root rot?

It is a balanced granule offering both breathability and moderate water retention. Its pores absorb only excess moisture, allowing standing water to drain quickly from the bottom of the pot to prevent root suffocation. When dry, it slowly releases stored moisture, preventing the plant from drying out too quickly and reducing the need for frequent watering.

5. Can it be mixed with expanded clay pebbles, volcanic rock, or Akadama soil?

Yes, it can be freely combined with other media. Mix with volcanic rock to enhance drainage, with Akadama soil to improve nutrient retention, or use expanded clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot for drainage; blending various granules allows you to tailor the mix to the specific needs of different plants.
